April and July are the two Camp NaNoWriMo events of the year. I’ve put together a list of prompts for writing, journaling, and even sharing on social media! If you want to sign up for writing/editing a project in 30 days and track your writing progress, be sure to visit nanowrimo.org. So without any further delay, here are 30 prompts for Camp NaNoWriMo:

1. What is your Camp Project? What’s the title, genre(s), and target age group?
2.  Log Line: What is the story about in one to two sentences? (Elevator Pitch)
3.  Author Bio: Introduce yourself as an author. If you don’t already have one, write your bio blurb that will be in the back of your book.
4. Plotter or Panster Writer: What is your process of creating your story? Do you plot and plan everything out ahead of time, or do you discover it as you write? Or are you a plantser (a mix between a plotter and a pantser)?
5. Comps: What books or stories would you say your project is similar to (Or a cross between two different stories)?
6.  Character Names: Do your character names have a meaning related to the story? How do you choose your character names? Do you use baby name books/websites or random name generators? Do you use the names of people you know?
7. Character Profiles or Descriptions: If you are a plotter and planner, fill out a profile for your main character(s). If you are a discovery writer, how did you first describe your character? What is your favorite part about this character? Are there any physical traits or style choices that resemble someone you know?
8. Casting Choices: If you were to choose actors to play your characters in the movie or tv adaptations, who would you cast as your MCs and Antagonists?
9. Cover Choices: Create a mock cover or describe what your ideal cover would look like. Is it illustrated? Does it have your MCs on the cover? Simple or Ornate font? Maximalist or Minimalist vibes?
10.  Opening Line: What is your story’s opening line? How does it draw the reader in?
11.  Favorite Line(s) from your Main Character(s)
12.  Favorite Line(s) from your Antagonist
13.  Playlists or Soundtracks: Do you create playlists of music to as you write to or songs that have the same atmosphere of the scenes in your project? If so, share what’s on your list.
14.  How are you writing the project? What is your choice of writing medium? Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Scrivener, By hand?  Do you use index cards plus a word processor?
15.  How do you track your progress?  Do you aim for a certain number of words per day? Or are you a one scene/chapter per day kind of writer?  If you are editing or revising, do you track by the page, scene, or chapter?
16.  Writing Rewards: Do you give yourself a reward for your progress? If so, what is that reward? Does this reward consistently motivate you?
17.  Maps: If the story is fantasy, create or describe the map of your world. If your story takes place in a fictional town, draw the road map of that town. Or, if the story takes place in the real world or uses historical settings, use maps to lay out your character’s travels in the story.
18.  What is your favorite trope (or a trope you used in the WIP) and why?
19. What is your least favorite trope to write or to read and why?
20.  Are you an escapist (get me out of reality!) or a catharsis (give me something I can relate to or make me feel something!) writer? What about in your reading?
21.  What is your ideal writing routine? Or which writer’s routine would you like to try if you had the chance and why?
22.  Traditional, Self, or Hybrid Publishing: If you are planning to publish your project, which route would you like to take?
23.  Are you an Overwriter or an Underwriter when it comes to your first drafts?  Do you write way too much and have to edit out all the extra details that aren’t needed and cut a third or more of your draft, or do you have to go back in and fill in details, atmosphere, and what feels like half a book?
24.  Drafting vs Editing: Which do you find more fun, and which do you find consumes more time and energy?
25.  Talking to others about your project: Are you someone who excitedly explains a lot of your story, or are you someone who keeps your project secret until it’s done? Why?
26.  Filler or Crutch words: What words do you use excessively? My top crutch words are “so” and “that.”
27. Eyes, Guts, Head, and Hands! How frequently do you refer to your characters’ eyes (narrowing, glaring, squinting), guts (churning, clenching), head (nodding, shaking, tilting), and hands (clenching, twitching, etc.)? As a writer vs a reader, how do you feel about these descriptions?
28. Back of the Book Blurb: If you haven’t already, write the blurb for the back of the book. 
29.  If you were to attempt Camp NaNoWriMo again, what would you do differently?
30.  What progress have you made on your project? Tally your word count, your pages edited, etc. and reflect on what went well this month.
